Last year, we were able to ring in “National Metal Day” on 11-11-11. Just a few months later, it’s already time for another music holiday – “Intergalactic Prog Metal Day” or “Rush Day” on 2-1-12, according to BraveWords.

In celebration of Rush, their landmark album 2112 and all of the bands that have been influenced by Rush ever since, various radio stations, music stores and websites have special events planned.

“Rush’s 2112 is probably the first album that can rightfully be called progressive metal, so it’s only appropriate we blast the album from the rooftops, from our cars, from our iPods, from everywhere, to celebrate this landmark album and Rush’s incredible longevity and lasting influence,” said Jeff Wagner, author of Mean Deviation: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal.

Plus, Wagner’s got big plans for 2112 – the year, not the album.

“We’re only a hundred years away now until 2112,” he said. “I’’l be waiting in my hypercube, ready for the big one!”

In a lengthy profile by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the thrash-metal bassist revealed that he’s an online student at suburban St. Louis’s Concordia Seminary, studying under the school’s Specific Ministry Program.

Long-term friends of Ellefson are not surprised by the news, given that Ellefson took his faith very seriously while attending his local Lutheran church as he was growing up in Minnesota. “I came from a good family, not a broken home,” Ellefson told the Post-Dispatch. “That became a model for me, and I saw church at center of it.”

Ellefson has even written songs for the Lutheran church he currently attends, using lyrics from the Old Testament. “For a Christmas service, I remixed some classics, not quite in a Megadeth fashion, but in a pretty heavy rock fashion,” he said.

Long aware of Ellefson’s obvious devotion, his current pastor, Jon Bjorgaard, encouraged Ellefson to enroll in the ministry program. “Most people want to become a rock star,” Bjorgaard said. “David’s a rock star who wants to become a pastor.”

Alice in Chains were able to release an album after the death of vocalist Layne Staley and a near 14-year hiatus and, against all odds, re-emerge as one of the best hard rock bands in the game. With new vocalist/guitarist William DuVall on board, the release of ‘Black Gives Way to Blue’ garnered AIC critical acclaim, two Grammy nods, and renewed interest in the long dormant band.

After extensive touring behind the album the band took some time off and quietly re-entered the studio to work on new material in 2011. Last we reported there were few details made available on the band’s upcoming fifth (second without Staley) full-length album, but Jerry Cantrell recently gave some insight on the project’s status to Rolling Stone at Dimebash — saying their downtime was slightly extended by health issues:

“We started writing last year. I had shoulder surgery. I had to get some bone spurs and torn cartilage taken care of, so that put me back a little bit. But we’ve been writing through the whole process.”

It is expected that Alice in Chains will enter the studio to continue work on the record later this year. Perhaps the fact that the conversation took place at an event honoring late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell inspired Cantrell to talk about the fragility of life and how the band still honors the memory of their fallen vocalist Layne Staley:

“Layne’s mother’s been doing a show for Layne every year, and we give to that. It’s good to remember your people. Life is very temporary, and we will be joining them shortly. Hopefully it’s not too soon, but it’s good. It’s some amazing people that should be remembered.”

The band has decided to move forward with veteran rock drummer Jason Sutter as the man behind the kit.

Since Chris Vrenna ended his 7-year union with Marilyn Manson a couple months back we haven’t heard much about the band’s strategy for moving forward. Blabbermouth recently reported that seasoned touring drummer Jasson Sutter will now serve as the shock-rock groups new stick-man. His first gig with the band will be during Manson’s appearance at the Soundwave Festival next month.

Sutter has been playing gigs since the age of 13 and has recently toured with Foreigner, New York Dolls, and Chris Cornell. He has also played with several other acts throughout his career including American Hi-Fi, Pink, Smash Mouth, Vertical Horizon and more.

Despite releasing the Shia Lebeouf-directed short film for the title track from their next album ‘Born Villain’ months ago, the band has yet to put out the eighth studio record but have a tentative release date for this February.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl recently addressed what he believes to be “the problem with the music industry,” calling it more a lack of quality than a lack of interest.

Recently Grohl spoke with Billboardand was asked about the problems plaguing the industry, to which he responded: “Someone asked me recently, ‘What do you think the problem with the music industry is?’ I said, ‘take the Adele record, for example. It’s an amazing record and everybody’s so shocked that it’s such a phenomenon. I’m not. You know why that record’s huge? Because it’s f—ing good and it’s real. Now imagine if all records were that good. Do you think only one of them would sell? F— no! All of them would. If all records were that good the music business would be on fire, but they’re not.’”

Grohl was also quick to dismiss the journalistic cliche that his beloved rock & roll is dead: “There’s always gonna be rock’n'roll bands, there’s always gonna be kids that love rock’n'roll records, and there will always be rock’n'roll. I travel all over the world and play music, and it’s easy to think rock’n'roll has gone away when you’re in a country like America. We just got back from a trip Down Under, we did a tour of Australia and New Zealand where we were pulling 40,000-50,000 people a night, selling out stadiums. To me, that means rock’n'roll is alive and well.” He’s not done!

Every day there is a new editorial focusing on the troubles facing the music business, with many of those at least taking a sidebar to identify rock & roll as the most endangered of all musical species. Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl has been fortunate enough to become incredibly successful with more than one act — but still goes on the defensive when people say that the trade he deals in is in danger.

Recently Grohl spoke with Billboard and was asked about the problems plaguing the industry, to which he responded:

“Someone asked me recently, ‘What do you think the problem with the music industry is?’ I said, ‘take the Adele record, for example.

Grohl was also quick to dismiss the journalistic cliche that his beloved rock & roll is dead:

“There’s always gonna be rock’n’roll bands, there’s always gonna be kids that love rock’n’roll records, and there will always be rock’n’roll. I travel all over the world and play music, and it’s easy to think rock’n’roll has gone away when you’re in a country like America. We just got back from a trip Down Under, we did a tour of Australia and New Zealand where we were pulling 40,000-50,000 people a night, selling out stadiums. To me, that means rock’n’roll is alive and well. The thing that will never go away is that connection you make with a band or a song where you’re moved by the fact that it’s real people making music. You make that human connection with a song like “Let It Be” or “Long and Winding Road” or a song like “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Roxanne,” any of those songs. They sound like people making music. In America, rock’n’roll isn’t in the forefront of the mainstream as it is the rest of the world…I don’t know what it is, but it’s one of the few countries in the world where rock’n’roll is not huge.”

The Foo Fighters latest album ‘Wasting Light’ was one of the most successful rock albums of 2011 and was nominated for six Grammy Awards — the second most nods behind Adele’s ’21,’ which received seven.

Heller, Getty ImagesGuns N’ Roses will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. The ceremony is slated for April 14 and many rock fans are wondering if the band’s classic ‘Appetite for Destruction’ lineup will reunite for the special occasion.

The drama between vocalist Axl Rose and Slash has been well documented, but the guitar hero is apparently getting nostalgic for the good old days. Slash recently waxed poetic in a recent interview with Esquire magazine.

“When I see footage of Guns N’ Roses, I see that f—ing hunger and attitude. You could not f— with those five guys. It was just raw. It was this lean, hungry thing on its way up. It was as sincere as any rock ‘n’ roll that I’ve ever heard, and I’m proud of that. The split between Axl and I was a quiet one. But because there was so much attention on the break-up – and are we going to get back together – it got built up into this monster that led to a kind of animosity that wasn’t the focus for me. Neither one of us wants to be down each other’s throats for no reason. At this point, I’m trying to put it to rest.”

So will Slash and Axl let bygones be bygones? Well maybe. Rose recently admitted to having mixed emotions about the Rock Hall… but “doesn’t want to spoil it for everybody else.”

If the ‘Appetite for Destruction’ era band does reunite, it will be the first time in over two decades that they’ve performed together.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place in Cleveland, Ohio. The ceremony will be broadcast at a later time on HBO.

Floyd was sentenced to 6 months in jail, but 3 months of that sentence was suspended. He also gets 3 days credit for time he has already served.

TMZ broke the story … the boxer was arrested in September 2010 — after his ex-girlfriend accused him of striking her “multiple times in the head with his fist” and then threatening to kill her.

Floyd struck a plea deal with prosecutors in the case — in which he pled guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence … in exchange for getting a pass on the felony battery charge.

Floyd also pled no contest to two misdemeanor harassment charges — after allegedly threatening to beat his kids too during the incident.

The judge was especially pissed that Mayweather struck his baby mama in front of their kids.

The judge also ordered Mayweather to complete 100 hours of community service and a 12-month domestic violence program. He was fined $2,500 … which to Floyd is like a poker hand.

The boxer must turn himself in on January 6, to begin serving his sentence.

The clip is available below, and includes some insight into the band’s relationship with former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy, who filled in behind the kit in 2010 and believed he would become a permanent A7X member:

Vengeance. “He’d been talking about quitting Dream Theater, that he wasn’t necessarily happy, and he was excited to be playing with us. We were playing huge shows and stuff; I think he got caught up in the moment, got excited. We begged him to consider what he did, because we were in no position to find a permanent replacement, because in all honesty you can’t replace Jimmy (Sullivan), who was our best friend — first and foremost — besides beng an amazing drummer. So it just wasn’t the right time and the place. And he told us, ‘Hey, I’ve got good news and bad news. I quit Dream Theater.’ We were like, ‘Oh, no. Well, if you’re happy, then that’s good.’ And he was saying: ‘Now I can be with you guys.’ And we were like, ‘That’s not necessarily what we decided upon. And you should take your time and reconsider.’ And he was like, ‘Well, I put out my press release.’ We were like, ‘Dude, that’s not how we do business. You should have talked to us before.’”

Portnoy filled in temporarily following the passing of Avenged Sevenfold drummer James “The Rev” Sullivan, who died on December 28th, 2009 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. He performed on the band’s 2010 album, Nightmare, and toured with the band for the record.
